0 Risk of Passive Smokers

Passive smoking is the inhalation of smoke, called secondhand smoke (SHS) or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), from tobacco products used by others. It occurs when tobacco smoke permeates any environment, causing its inhalation by people within that environment. Exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke causes disease, disability, and death.  Currently, the health risks of secondhand smoke are a matter of scientific consensus, and these risks have been a major motivation for smoking bans in workplaces and indoor public places, including restaurants, bars and night clubs, as well as some open public spaces.

"Only 30 minutes contact with someone else's cigarette smoke can damage the heart," said the magazine Globe and Mail of Canada in a research report in Japan. By using a new ultrasound technology, researchers at Osaka City University can directly measure the damaging effects of cigarette smoke other people who inhaled the endothelial cells that exist in the cavities of the heart and blood vessels. When healthy, these cells stimulate normal blood circulation by helping to prevent the buildup of plaque on blood vessel walls and formation of blood clots. The researchers found that blood flow of people who do not smoke "about 20 percent better than the blood stream of smokers. But after contact with cigarette smoke from others in just 30 minutes", their blood flow down to the level of blood flow smoker. According to researchers Dr.Ryo Otsuka, "this show direct evidence of the damaging effects of passive smoking on coronary circulation in nonsmokers."
